Tab/link dump part zoogly-six

I realise that I haven't been posting actual posts for months now. It's not annoying to anyone else but me, but it's something I like to do, and something I think I should be doing, especially now - for various reasons that may or may not ever be recorded, depending on whether or not I actually get a general day-to-day post down.

Today, however, is another link-dump day. PREPARE YESELF:

1. "Things which seame incredible": Cannibalism in Early Jamestown

2. Good summings-up that happen to bundle together a lot of things that make me shout, "Yes, exactly!" (which is not to say that other parts of the series are not as good, just that they don't resonate as much with me and my particular bugbears.):

Steadfast Daughters in a Quivering World ~ Part 4: Acknowledgement & Apologies
Your child’s exertion of will [which includes anything you deem unacceptable---grumpiness, for example] is an act of war, and parenting is about the parent winning any and all battles of wills... respect demanded only for the authority figure (who may act disrespectfully to others, which is okay, but must always be respected by all underlings, unless they wish to risk punishment)...”
Steadfast Daughters in a Quivering World ~ Part 6: Soul-Binding
I no longer desire to control my offspring and call it wholesome parenting. I admit, owning obedient, compliant children and teenagers makes for a convenient and orderly life but when the price is my child’s soul, it is not a game I will choose to play again. Further, I had no idea just how very wonderful my children really were until I met them – raw, without expectation or criticism – just their fabulous selves.

3. Another article, particularly about the Pearls: Spare the quarter-inch plumbing supply line, spoil the child

4. The Chicago Tribune, "chronic Lyme disease," and demands for false balance
and
Conspiracy Thinking – Skepticism’s Evil Twin

5. Oprah's Dickens

6. Not Your Mom’s Trans 101
Cis people seem to think that self-identification is only for trans folks. They don’t have to “identify” as men and women– they just ARE! Their gender isn’t “self-identified,” it’s “self-evident!”
What they fail to understand is that self identification is the only meaningful way to determine gender.
(I'm just excitedly slapping down a quote I liked - go to the post itself to get what it's really about, because this is only one awesome bit.)

7. Zoe at A. E. Brain posted this: Employment Discrimination and the Transsexual, which is utterly fantastic - I am SO ignorant about the law, full stop as it stands for issues of transsexuality, so yay!
